Def Jam save $100 million

Ja Rule's record label, Island Def Jam, saved themselves nearly $132 million in a recent court case.

The record label had been sued by Ja's former label TVT after Island Def Jam blocked the rapper from finishing an album he had made for TVT in 2001.

The jury in the original trial found Island Def Jam guilty of fraud and breech of copyright, and had awarded TVT $132 million, though the judge later cut this to $54 million.

However Island Def Jam recently appealed against the decision, and had the damages cut to just $127,000 - or less than 0.1% of the original sum.

The appeals court said there was not enough evidence for the jury to conclude there was fraud. It also said the jury had awarded too much money for the breech of copyright.

TVT's attorney said the company will appeal against the court's decision.

Rumours the jury awarded such a large amount after they confused Ja Rule with look-a-like Ashanti have been strenuously denied.
