Stanley Clarke-Night School
Universal Music Group Distribution
by A.Scott Galloway

The pioneering electric bassist gathered together an all-star cast of friends to play in various groupings for an Ocotber 24, 2002 Musicians Institute concert. The jam sessions yield mixed results but there are plenty of highlights music lovers will want to see. Stevie Wonder sits in on both “Everyday I Have the Blues” and the John Coltrane jazz classic “Giant Steps,” Stanley plays upright acoustic bass in a trio setting with violinist Karen Briggs and banjo player Bela Fleck on “Song to John,” several orchestral pieces from his film scores and ANYTHING that Police drummer Stewart Copeland is playing on. But the hands-down highlight is the finale where a GANG of bassists descend upon the stage to all take a solo on Stanley ’s signature tune “School Days.” Those bassists are Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Marcus Miller, Wayman Tisdale, Bunny Brunel, Alex Al, Stewart Hamm, Jimmy Johnson, Billy Sheehan, Alex Al and Amand Sabal-Lecco.
